The second full week of 2021 is roaring like a lion – or a snow leopard?
By Monday night, a large low-pressure system will bring snowstorms to much of western Finland. Heavy snow takes effect in up to 21 meters per second. The wind blows the western seas between Hanko and Vaasa.
Yle meteorologist Joonas Koskela said that Western and Southern Finland can gain up to 50 cm during the first three days of the week.
The central areas should be about 15 cm, smaller accumulations to the east and north.
“On Monday, the southwest and south coasts will rise by about 10 cm. Tuesday’s accumulation can be as high as 30 cm locally in the south, about 10 cm on Wednesday, “Koskela predicted on Sunday night.
Dangerous driving south and west
The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued a 24-hour traffic weather warning starting in Monday evening to a large area of Southern and Western Finland from Southeast Kymenlaakso to Pirkanmaa and Satakunta.
It states that the probability of very bad road conditions is 60 percent due to a snowstorm. Major traffic disruptions are possible and a “significant risk of an accident”.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute points out that snow caused by strong winds can reduce visibility and cause snowfall.
Temperatures drop to -20 or -30
Early in the week, temperatures in the south and west are a few degrees below zero, elsewhere they drop to -10 degrees Celsius or colder. In the east and north, the thermometer may drop below -20.
“To the southwest, the temperature can rise around zero, so some of the rain can be very wet snow. It easily adheres to trees and can therefore cause power outages, ”warns Koskela.
Rainfall should shift on Wednesday, followed by a shift toward much colder weather. With the exception of the Far North, the rest of the week is very cold throughout the country.
On Thursday, readings in southern Finland will fall between -10 and -15 degrees, while the central regions will vibrate between -20 and -30. On Friday and Saturday, temperatures will continue to fall, approaching or reaching -20 ° C even on the south coast.
“It seems that the temperature is at least -20 degrees, even during the day, in most of the country,” Koskela said.
