– You can compare it to the cars’ airbags.
– The car will be slowed down. Maybe the car will be damaged, but the person behind the wheel will not be damaged, says area manager Charlotte Vithen, Road Directorate.
As recently as Wednesday morning, a car drove into a sign on the E45 Østjyske Motorway between Vejle N and the Vejlefjord bridge.
The car was totally damaged, but there was no damage to road workers who were in the process of performing maintenance work on the road.
It got worse in 2018 when a Falck rescuer who was assisting in an emergency situation was hit and killed.
– Unfortunately, we have had some serious accidents in the last few years, where people who handle acute incidents have been hit.
– It is against this background that we have decided to introduce the new system in connection with a new tender, says Charlotte Vithen.
The system is also called TMA, and it works by placing carts with bumpers in front of the place where the emergency situation has arisen.
About 50 to 60 of the new cushion carts will be needed.
Falck, which is the Danish Road Directorate’s partner, has delivered five wagons at present.
The plan is that the rest will come over the next four years.
– This is because these systems do not exist on the market today. You have to go out and rebuild existing systems, or you have to start producing some brand new ones.
– It will take a while before they are fully phased in, says Charlotte Vithen.
Implementation of the system takes place in connection with a tender that sets requirements for the contractors who solve tasks for the Danish Road Directorate and the National Police on state roads.
