Turku Repair Yard delivered the bow as part of the EUR 7.6 million Sea Navigation Motorways of the Sea II project. The project aims to improve the maritime navigation system in winter and strengthen safety in winter.

Finland is launching a new sustainable icebreaker
The Transport Infrastructure Agency unveiled this week a new innovative icebreaker model, the Calypso, equipped with a hybrid motor with a detachable spring.
The bow operates on a hybrid electrical system that uses two generators. The use of this type of system as an engine for icebreakers will significantly reduce fuel consumption and help Finland achieve its ambitious goal of reducing emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
The new vessel is currently moored in the port of Mustola in Lappeenranta and has started operations in Saimaa.

Latvia and Finland are joining forces to manufacture armored vehicles
Finland and Latvia will co-operate in the development of armored vehicles for the defense forces of both countries this year.
Patria, a joint venture between the Finnish government and the Norwegian defense group Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace AS, is currently signing agreements and negotiating with Latvian companies manufacturing sheet metal products and serving heavy trucks.
Patria expects to start mass production of vehicles this year and has identified at least six Latvian manufacturers that meet their requirements.

Finnish researchers are working on a mink coronavirus vaccine
Researchers at the University of Helsinki and Finnish fur producers are working together to develop a vaccine that protects the health of animals raised as fur and the people who work with these animals.
Preliminary results from vaccinating a farmed fur animal have been promising, according to university researchers.
Although Finland has not yet detected any COVID-19 infection in farmed minks, at least 10 countries have reported similar cases. Denmark, a leading producer of mink fur, killed millions of animals last year to prevent the virus from spreading to humans.

Helsinki intends to address youth employment
The Finnish capital is launching a new plan to combat unemployment among people under 30. According to reports, youth unemployment fell significantly in 2019, but the coronavirus pandemic has led to less job vacancies and a sharp rise in unemployment.
The new strategy is aimed in particular at hard-to-employ groups and the long-term unemployed. Those who meet this criterion will be offered a new type of Service Planning in March.

European Shooting events were postponed due to global health problems
The European Shooting Association (ESC) has suspended the 10-meter European Championships for rifles, pistols and running targets, which were held in Lohja, Finland due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The events would have provided six qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics – four in the rifle classes and two in the pistol classes. The ESC hopes to hold the event later.
