A 42-year-old man has been sentenced by the Court in Randers to five years in prison for repeatedly exposing his stepson of 11 months to serious violence and ill-treatment.
This is stated by the East Jutland Police in a press release.
The abuse took place in August and September 2019.
In addition, the boy’s 42-year-old mother has been sentenced to 60 days in prison for complicity in violence. This is because she has not reacted, even though “to some extent she may have known that her son was subjected to violence”.
The boy was 11 months old when he was taken to the emergency room for examination in September 2019, because the educators in his nursery in Randers had on several occasions discovered bruises in various places on his body.
The doctors found in several examinations that the boy had suffered a fracture of the femur, tibia, pelvis and several ribs in addition to the bruises. In addition, he had skull fractures and bleeding in the brain.
Against this background, the doctors assessed that he had been subjected to violence. The next day, both the mother and the stepfather were arrested and remanded in custody.
On the stepfather’s phone, investigators found several searches that confirmed the suspicion of violence.
Among other things, he had searched for “sore point on a baby”, “hit a baby hard” and “hit child consequences”.
– These are extremely serious matters for which the boy’s stepfather is convicted. It is of course insane to expose a defenseless baby to such serious violence, says special prosecutor Jesper Rubow in the press release.
– I am satisfied that the mother is also held accountable, even though according to the verdict she has not had an active role in the commission of the violence. It is clear that she should have reacted and stopped the violence against her son.
In addition to the assault, the 42-year-old man was also convicted of possession of amphetamine and a theft charge.
He pleaded not guilty to the assault, but received the sentence.
The 42-year-old woman refused and asked for time to consider appealing the verdict.
The man must pay 30,000 kroner in compensation to the boy.
