Five buildings at the University of Iceland were flooded last night when a large water pipeline in western Reykjavík exploded, Indicator reports. As a result, the university was closed this morning as crews began repairs that are still ongoing at the time of writing.
This cleaning can take a considerable amount of time, as it is estimated that about 2,000 tonnes of water flooded the buildings. The buildings that will be affected are Háskólatorg, Gimli, Lögberg, Árnagarður and the main building.
Making things worse is the fact that the university is not insured against damage of this kind.
“We are a state institution and the government does not guarantee,” said rector Jón Atli Benediktsson to journalists. “But we will talk to our ministry immediately and we have already received a positive response in this matter and other parties have intervened in the matter. But I can not comment further on that subject. “
Some buildings are without electricity and the damage is great. It is uncertain at the time of writing when the university can start the campus’ operations at these buildings.
“We have seen that the floor, furniture and walls are in bad shape, so are the doors,” said Jón. “We have to deal with all of this. We are looking at two, three months of work in all of this. “
