In eastern Iceland, a state of uncertainty has been declared due to the continued danger of avalanches and landslides. Over the weekend, the region experienced very heavy rainfall, with avalanches, floods and landslides recorded in several areas stretching from Höfn in southeastern Iceland to Borgarfjörður eystri in the northeast of the country. The incidents resulted in property and power line damage, but no injuries were reported.
The weekend saw the most rainfall in Borgarfjörður eystri, around 130mm, while measurements were almost as high in Neskaupsstaður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Eskifjörður.
In Seyðisfjörður, where mudslides destroyed a dozen buildings in December, the rainfall was 70 mm. The rain has since stopped.
Due to the situation on Sunday night, three houses were evacuated in Seyðisfjörður, but yesterday the evacuation order was canceled.
