The metal band Blind Channel will represent Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) after winning Yle’s New Music Competition (UMK) on Saturday night.
The Dark Side song in Metal Outfit was by far the audience favorite, earning 551 points, while second-placed Teflon Brothers and Pandora received 180 points.
The winner was chosen by a combination of votes from the audience (75 percent) and the international jury (25 percent).
Responding to their victory, the band said "The Finns have understood the DNA of the country," referring to Finland’s reputation as a “great metal nation”.
In May, the group will compete with 40 other samples in Rotterdam, where the Blind Channel said they hope to see at least some people in the audience.
"It’s much cooler to perform in public than just cameras," singer-guitarist Joel Hokka said because there were no spectators in Saturday ‘s qualifier in Tampere due to the coronavirus situation.
Historically, Finland has rarely done well in ESC and won only once the longest annual international TV singing competition.
The monstrous metal band Lordi made the history of Eurovision in 2006, when it became the first hard rock exhibition and the first Finnish competition-winning song with their song ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’.
In 2020, the organizers of the pan-European singing competition suspended the event due to the coronavirus.
