The number of people infected and killed with coronavirus in the country’s nursing homes has dropped significantly since the year began.
In fact, it has fallen to such an extent that it can not be due to anything other than the Danish vaccine effort.
This is what Jan Pravsgaard Christensen, professor of immunology at the University of Copenhagen, tells TV2.
When corona infection peaked in December, 467 people were found infected in nursing homes in one week. It was in week 53.
Since then, the number has dropped from week to week. Here, about two months later – in week seven – there were just five new cases. It shows figures from the Statens Serum Institut.
– When the decline is so extreme, it is quite clear that it is the vaccines that are making their entrance now, says Jan Pravsgaard Christensen to the TV channel.
The same trend is seen in relation to the number of deaths with coronavirus.
In week 53, there were 88 corona-related deaths in nursing homes. Meanwhile, in week 7, there were six people who died after being infected.
Denmark has been vaccinating against coronavirus since 27 December last year.
According to Jan Pravsgaard Christensen, it is worth noting that it usually takes a few weeks to become seriously ill from a covid-19 infection. Therefore, we only see the effect of the vaccines in the numbers now, he says to TV2.
Especially in the first weeks of 2021, there have been several corona-related deaths. This applies to anything between 467 and 13 registered deaths per week.
Last week was the first time this year that less than ten coronavirus deaths were recorded.
The six deaths roughly correspond to the level from before the so-called “second wave” broke through.
The figures also show that in week seven, fewer were tested against coronavirus among nursing home residents than in the first weeks of the year, writes TV2.
This is a total of about 40 percent of the more than 2,300 deaths during the corona epidemic in Denmark that have occurred in nursing homes.
