Einar Bjarnason, director of operations for the Bláfjöll ski resort, made it clear that he had to close the ski slopes at the request of the Civil Defense Agency.
He says the weather was not as good this year as it is today. However, due to today’s earthquakes on the Reykjanes peninsula, the Civil Defense Agency declared a state of emergency and demanded that the ski resort be closed.
“It’s simply the best day of the year. There is clear sky and sun “ Einar said and admitted that the weather was so good that he was sitting outside in a short sleeve.
He added that today there were several hundred people on the slopes. When the Civil Protection Agency decided to close the area at 3 p.m. Einar was disappointed.
Closing the entire ski area in such weather is very sad.
However, he added that the skiers took the news of the slopes closed fairly calmly. Everyone heard about the earthquake, but it didn’t bother anyone from skiing or snowboarding.
“This is downright absurd. You look out the window, at the blue sky, it is windless and sunny and we are not allowed to open the slopes “ Einar said, commenting that there was a lot of traffic on the slopes.
During the interview, he said he hoped the weather would be just as good tomorrow and the Civil Protection Agency would allow the slopes to open.
