– When I look back, I think: Stop what a great life I have had!
Keld Arne Heick was born in Frederiksberg in 1946.
Every Sunday the radio was tuned to “Giro 413”.
The sound of Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” thrilled the young Keld Heick.
– It was an absolutely wonderful world. I was totally lost in it, says Keld Heick.
At the age of 15, he wrote his first songs, but it was still cover songs he played for his very first appearance.
Back then, it was quite hot to be in a band, and Keld Heick allied himself with a bunch of comrades. That was the start of The Donkeys.
They were on their way to something big, but the deprivation made Hilda ask him to stop.
– If I had to choose between Hilda and the music, there was no doubt – then it was her!
She then encouraged him to resume music, and after a victory at the Danish Championships in barbed wire music, The Donkeys were finally on their way to the top of the pop.
A producer called for something in Danish, and it became “Ved landsbyens gadekær”, which was the band’s big breakthrough.
In 1979, the worst thing that could happen to a singer happened. Keld Heick lost his voice – caused by a polyp.
Thankfully, it was benign, but Keld Heick was advised to spare the vote.
Should he continue with the music, it was not in an orchestra, but as a soloist – and preferably in a duo with his wife Hilda, whom he had previously met on the duet “Do You Speak English”.
The couple know each other all the way back from 2nd grade.
At a party in their teens, it struck sparks, and after being boyfriends for three years, they got engaged.
Keld Heick is registered for 12-1300 songs.
He has written lyrics for, among other things, “We paint the city red” and “Under the stars in the sky”, all of which have won the Danish Melody Grand Prix.
Keld Heick has had 31 numbers in the competition and won with nine of them.
He has hosted the Grand Prix several times.
TV has filled a lot. Among other things, he has hosted “Lykkehjulet” on TV2 and “Musikbutikken” on DR.
This year, in addition to his 75th birthday, Keld Heick can celebrate his 60th birthday.
– As long as we feel we have something to give and the audience is there, we continue. Once you have made an appearance and people are happy and satisfied and maybe even get up and clap at the end, you can live long on it.
Keld Heick lives privately with his wife north of Copenhagen – close to his daughter Annette, son-in-law Jesper and her grandchildren.
