As per report, in 2019, 10,600 violations of domestic violence were registered – 7% more than in the previous year.
More than three quarters of the victims of domestic violence were women, and the victims were 25-34 year olds. However, the report also noted significant differences in age groups. For example, boys were more than half of minor victims of domestic violence.
According to THL’s development manager Martha October, cases of domestic violence against minors reported to the authorities have more than doubled.
A total of 18 people were killed by their partners in 18, and preliminary studies found long-term abuse in 80 percent of cases.
Intoxicants also played a key role in the murders: 61 percent of offenders were under the influence of drugs at the time.
According to the Police and Statistics Finland, domestic violence increased even faster in 2020 due to the substance abuse and mental health problems caused by the pandemic and subsequent restrictions.
