The Ministry of Justice announced on Saturday that the Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson (SPP) had agreed with the secretaries of the parliamentary parties that the municipal elections should be postponed to 13 June due to the worsening coronavirus situation.
The ministry said in a tweet that eight of the nine parties are in favor of the delay, ensuring it is approved by the legislature.
Municipal elections were originally held on April 18th. Advance voting was scheduled to begin in Finland and abroad in just over a month, on 7 April.
Afternoon newspaper Iltalehti said on Friday that the June schedule was being prepared as well as a discussion about a possible delay until next autumn.
The only opportunity for the Finnish party
The largest opposition party, the National Finnish Party, had said in advance that it was opposed to postponing the elections. Some other parties had also expressed doubts about changing the schedule before Saturday.
Consensus is usually sought between parties on decisions related to major elections.
