- The Palestinian Authority is sharply criticized for allowing politicians, football players and journalists to lead the vaccination queue.
- This must have happened despite the fact that the authority promised that older health care workers would be given priority.
- The Palestinian Authority, which has limited access to the Covid-19 vaccine, had promised that health workers and the elderly would be given priority.
“The Palestinian Authority has chosen to vaccinate top officials, politicians and their relatives, our system is so corrupt,” said Palestinian human rights activist Issa Amro.
As the echo could tell as early as Wednesday, the Palestinian human rights organization ICHR has documented cases where vaccines have gone to celebrities, politicians’ relatives, senior officials, football players and journalists, while access to vaccines is limited.
So far, only 6,000 Palestinians vaccinated against Covid 19, with vaccines from, among others, the World Health Organization WHO and Israel. Israel, which has been criticized by the UN for not contributing to the vaccination of Palestinians, has now started vaccinating Palestinian workers who commute to Israel and provided the PA with a number of vaccine doses that the Palestinian Authority is now accused of using incorrectly.
The Swedish aid organization Diakonia, has in a detailed report reviewed who is responsible for supplying Palestinians with vaccination. According to the Geneva Convention and international law, the responsibility falls on Israel, but the Oslo Accords of 1993 state that it is the Palestinian Authority that is responsible for the health care of the Palestinians.
But according to Joakim Wohlfeil at Diakonia, the responsibility falls on all parties to cooperate during a pandemic.
“International law is clear with the civilian population also having the right to health care during a conflict and this is a responsibility that falls on the various parties, in this case Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. Then it is up to the Palestinian Authority that health care should be delivered non-discriminatory and with the highest medical standard and then you must of course prioritize people with high medical needs and not high politicians and their friends “, Joakim Wohlfeil at Diakonia
