Hundreds of Finnish organizations are threatened by email hacking

The National Cyber Security Center says that it is aware that the e-mail systems of at least ten organizations in Finland have been hacked and that hundreds of corporate, municipal and other group e-mail services are at risk.

The Center issued an updated warning on Monday (in Finnish) that active exploitation has targeted a critical vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange servers.

Experts believe that the email systems of tens of thousands of organizations worldwide have been hacked. Juha Tretyakov, An expert from the National Cyber Security Center told Yle that the scale of the problem has been seen in Finland for at least two decades.

The Center has informed administrators that a simple update to the servers is not enough to handle the intrusion, and will determine other steps required to update the security.

The situation does not require action by individual users.

Although Tretyakov has already said that it is certain that the e-mail systems of at least ten organizations in Finland have been hacked, the Cyber Security Center has not taken a position on who or which units may be behind the ongoing intrusions.

"It is up to the police to find out" he said.
