– I’m not so surprised by the number. But I’m worried about that. It has been the most bumpy startup for FGU one can almost imagine. It only managed to run for half a year before the corona hit.
– It is always a difficult exercise to start a new education. And it has been under very, very harsh conditions. Here we must be aware that the students do not get in trouble, says Minister for Children and Education Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil (S) about the figures.
FGU was created under the former government and aims to help young people who, for professional, personal or social reasons, are not ready to start a study or work.
There are a number of tracks in education that all need to make young people more educational or labor market ready.
Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil says that FGU was largely kept open despite covid-19 restrictions in the first half of 2020. And immediately the figures show that absenteeism fell significantly in March, April and May, when large parts of the rest of society was shut down.
– FGU has always had the opportunity to take in students who are having a hard time. So FGU has been less closed than other youth educations and has had a significant part of the students inside.
– But these figures emphasize that there must be a great deal of political attention on FGU until it is properly started, says Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil.
Despite the significant absence, the Minister believes that FGU is long-term sustainable and will be a success.
– Now it was before our reign, so I can afford to say this here: FGU is some of the best education policy that has been made for many, many decades.
– A huge amount of work is being done to succeed and the students’ feedback is good. So I have no doubt at all that the direction is the right one, she says.
