Reported by the daughter of the Swedish-Chinese publisher Gui Minhai.
The media authority in the UK writes that the Chinese television company violated the author and publisher Gui Minhai’s privacy when they sent the coercive confessions in January 2016 and February 2018, respectively, the newspaper Journalisten writes.
Gui Minhai’s daughter, Angela Gui, reported the television company and is now right.
In an email to the Journalist, she writes that “the verdict is an important mark against the Chinese state’s violations of human rights”.
Earlier this year, Chinese state television’s broadcasting license was revoked because it was not considered independent television, but controlled by the Chinese state.
Gui Minhai is a Swedish citizen, but born in China where he ran a book publishing house in Hong Kong. Gui Minhai published books criticizing Chinese leaders and the country’s policies, but the Chinese government claims that he disseminated information about China to other countries.
Sweden has demanded that China releases the publisher but the Chinese state does not recognize his Swedish citizenship.
It was in 2015 that Gui Minhai was arrested by Chinese agents and taken to China when he was at his holiday home in Thailand. Around the same time, four other colleagues of Gui Minhai disappeared. Everyone worked at a bookstore that sold critical books about the ruling party elite.
Gui Minhai remained released for a few months but without permission to leave the country, before being arrested again. In 2020, he was sentenced to ten years in prison.
The arrest of Gui Minhai has stirred up strong emotions around the world.
The Swedish Foreign Ministry prioritises the case as one of its most important, which has led to strained relations between Sweden and China.
