Support for a new travel voucher

Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Innovation, announced that her idea of giving Icelanders a tourist voucher (ferðagjöf) again during the summer was well received at today’s government meeting.

Ferðagjöf was valued at 5,000 kronor and was awarded by the government to every adult resident of Iceland. It could be used, inter alia, in tourist facilities, hotels or restaurants. A large number of residents have not yet managed to redeem their voucher, so its validity has been extended until September.

“We have decided to extend the validity of the voucher, and we are also checking whether we will not repeat this venture, although no official decision has been made yet. This initiative will be discussed by economists, although there is already a lot of support for it, as the voucher has proved to be a success generating increased tourism traffic. “
