The proportion of elderly Icelanders to the rest of Iceland is one of the lowest compared to most other European countries.
In a new ranking published by Eurostat, we find information that citizens aged 65 and over accounted for 14.4% of all inhabitants of Iceland and Ireland. The data comes from the beginning of last year. Both countries are in second place after Turkey, where the ratio is 9.1%.
The oldest group of citizens accounts for almost a fifth of all inhabitants in the rest of the European Union and has grown significantly in recent years. Their percentage increased in the EU by 3 percentage points over a decade. In Iceland, the ratio has changed from 13.2% to 14.2% since 2014.
The highest proportion of elderly residents is in Italy, it is as much as 23.2%
of the population, followed by Greece and Finland (22.3%).
