Attorney general Tuomas Pöysti has criticized members of the senior management of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their efforts to transfer the head of the consular department; Pasi Tuominen to the new office, according to a BTI report.
Due to disagreements within the Ministry, the Foreign Minister in the autumn of 2019 led the repatriation of Finnish citizens from the al-Hol immigrant camp in Northern Syria. Pekka Haavisto (Green) requested that Tuominen be transferred to a new position.
The controversy led to a split in the Foreign Ministry and engulfed Haavisto in a political crisis.
Pöysti said he had no reason to suspect the commission of the crime, but noted that the Ministry’s Foreign Minister and Under-Secretary of State would have been entitled to investigate the legality of the transfer under the Foreign Ministry Act and the Administrative Administration Procedural Act.
The Chancellor of Justice has previously stated that the way in which Parliament deals with legal issues related to the activities of ministers needs to be clarified.
