Yesterday afternoon a group of 10 from Björgunarsveitin Þorbjörn went to mark the route to Fagradalsfjall. They were working in very stormy weather to prepare a new route to the volcano.
If the eruption area is reopened, it will be possible to walk along the safer and signposted path from Suðurstrandavegur to the volcano eruption itself.
Well-equipped people are expected to take about one and a half to two hours to walk this route.
At the same time, please be careful and systematically check the weather forecasts and be well prepared.
Now that the wind is slowly calming down, heavy gas pollution can be expected around the eruption. This is because the crater is located in a large depression.
We would also like to ask everyone not to walk on the new lava, it is just very dangerous!
Traffic on the road
Vegagerðin announced today that Suðurstrandarvegur, which has been closed since March 18, will be open with restrictions tonight, as seen in the image above.
However, according to a Vegagerðin announcement released yesterday evening, the road is still closed to public traffic between Grindavík and the crossing with Krýsuvíkurvegur. It is also worth noting that the Civil Defense Agency closed the eruption area and it is still in force.
