Cross-border business trips in the port are still allowed, especially for essential workers. Non-essential travel is prohibited even if the alien presents the required certificate of a negative coronavirus test result.
According to the Border Guard, almost half of the passengers who arrived from Estonia (45 per cent) last week were logistics workers, such as transport operators, about 15 per cent provided essential services and another 15 per cent were Finnish citizens. The border guard turned 64 passengers back.
Ships travel between the two countries on a daily basis, and the Finnish authorities need to coordinate with their Estonian counterparts to facilitate border controls. Since January, the Port of Helsinki has received an average of 10,000 to 13,000 visitors a week.
Last week, more than 5,200 passengers from Schengen and non-Schengen countries arrived in Finland via Helsinki Airport. Nearly 35 people were denied entry.
In addition, Finland’s borders with Sweden and Norway were crossed about 5,700 and 2,400 times, mostly by Finns.
According to the Border Guard, cross-border travel between Finland and its neighboring countries Estonia, Sweden and Norway decreased by at least 90 per cent last year.
