Yesterday, due to bad weather, the eruption area was closed by the police from Suðurnes.
According to the weather forecast, today the weather at the eruption site in Geldingadalur will be bad and definitely not suitable for hiking. Yesterday the area was closed by Suðurnes police due to worsening weather and no notification of reopening has been received.
On the website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office, it was written that today a strong and gusty wind is forecast, the strength of which can vary from 13 to 18 meters per second, snowfall and blizzards at the eruption site.
Visibility will be limited or very bad, so the weather will not be favorable for hiking. In the afternoon the strength of the wind and snowfall will slightly decrease, and in the evening it should calm down and lighten up. As yesterday, the gases from the volcano continue to travel south of the eruption site.
About the eruption itself, it can be said that the situation is fairly stable and there are slight changes there, for example in terms of lava flow.
Einar Bessi Gestsson, the conservation officer at the Meteorological Office, says seismic activity in the metamorphic area from Grindavík to Kleifarvatn was slightly lower tonight than the night before. In total, sixty earthquakes were detected in this area, but last night there were over a hundred.
The Scientific Council for Civil Protection met yesterday and then issued an announcement on the state of the eruption.
Among other things, it was found that it is considered unlikely that the magma will approach the surface elsewhere in the magma chamber in the near future.
