It has not been possible to get a comment from Mette Frederiksen (S) about the Danish invitation, but Minister of Climate Dan Jørgensen (S) sees the meeting as a good opportunity to show experiences with Danish climate solutions.
– It is a great opportunity for a small country like Denmark, which accounts for 0.1 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions and has the opportunity to influence those who pollute much more.
– It is a good opportunity to make a difference and show our experiences with offshore wind, energy efficiency and a future energy island in the North Sea. These are solutions we need other countries to use. It will be good for the climate and Danish jobs, says Dan Jørgensen.
Denmark is one of six EU countries that have received an invitation. The same is true of Italy, France, Poland, Germany and Spain. The Prime Minister of Norway, Erna Solberg, has also been invited.
In addition, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Union Charles Michel have been invited.
Leaders from all 17 economies that make up the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate Change (MEF) have been invited. Together, they are responsible for about 80 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions.
These are Australia, Brazil, Canada, the EU, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, China, Mexico, Russia, the United Kingdom, South Africa, South Korea, Germany and the United States.
Before the summit in April, the USA is expected to announce a climate goal for 2030. Dan Jørgensen will not make an offer on what an ambitious goal will be seen with Danish glasses.
However, he makes no secret of the fact that the Danish side is satisfied with the change in the presidency.
– There has been a major shift in American climate policy. Trump was sometimes outspoken against climate action and denied man-made climate change.
– Now we have a new president who has climate as a focus area and takes international leadership on it. This gives optimism, which may have been a bit absent in the climate area, says Dan Jørgensen.
The virtual climate summit will take place on 22 and 23 April and will be livestreamed so that all interested parties can follow.
