Orange and yellow weather alert and road closures

Orange and yellow weather alert and road closures

There is an orange weather alert in the South, South-East, Westfjords, Faxaflói Bay and Breiðafjörður Bay. A Yellow Alert was issued for Reykjavik and the surrounding area, Strandir and the Northwest, the Eastern Fjords and Central Iceland.

Due to very bad weather conditions, the Suðurlandsvegur road between Hvolsvöllur and Vík was closed. It is unclear how long the road will be closed, and police in southern Iceland recommend that those planning a trip follow traffic and weather information on the Icelandic Road Administration website vegagerdin.is.

The Nesjavellir route has also been closed, as have many other highland roads. Suðurlandsvegur between Kvísker and Freysness has also closed.

Wind strengths in warning areas can exceed 30 meters per second, and much more severe gusts can be expected in the mountains. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, snowfall and heavy rains can be expected, which will lead to very poor visibility and driving conditions will be very dangerous.

The weather around Breiðafjörður bay, as in the south, is very bad. People are warned not to go outside and limit travel.
