As only 30 years old, the West Jutland playmaker certainly has several good handball years in him, but with the prospect of becoming a mother and a nearly 14-year career as a professional behind him, the likely outcome is a career break.
– Now I turn 30, and I am also ready for a new life to start, says Grigel, who, however, keeps a door to the active career in check.
– I will never say never, because think now if I suddenly feel like playing handball again and do not feel like I’m done with it at all.
However, the consideration for physics comes into play even more now that a role as a mother will soon come first. She will not gamble with the opportunity to be able to be active with her future child.
– I have had two operations on each knee, and it means a lot when you have lived by playing handball since you were 17 years old, as I have. I could feel that my knees were starting to be pressed, Grigel explains.
She came to Nantes in the summer of 2019 on a two-year contract and thus has a contract expiration shortly before the birth. Already, however, the shoes have been put away and resin pushed aside to care for the pregnancy.
Thus, she may have played her last handball match – at least at the top level. So far, the maternity leave will be in the West of France, but Grigel and her husband have not made plans for where they will live in the future.
– Right now we enjoy being here in our little house with garden. We actually only take one day at a time at the moment, it sounds from Grigel.
Her career took off in 2008, when she as a 17-year-old first made her debut for Team Esbjerg and the same year made her debut on the Danish A national team as one of the youngest ever.
She has played 112 matches for the national team with 163 goals as a result and was most recently in a final round at the World Cup in Japan in 2019.
It never became a title with the national team, but after starting her foreign career in Russian Rostov-Don in 2015, she reached a Russian championship and a triumph in the EHF Cup, before switching to Debreceni in Hungary in 2017.
While playing in Hungary, Grigel also got married to her boyfriend in Denmark in 2018.
Now she’s leaving her 20s – and probably also a career as an active.
