It sparked sharp criticism from residents of the two areas who feared the consequences for the environment.
The politicians subsequently decided that the minks should be dug up when the animals would no longer pose a risk of infection after six months.
Now the time is approaching for the exhumation of the dead mink. It is expected to happen by May.
The task of digging up the animals and transporting them has been put out to tender. The same goes for the task of destroying the mink.
This task reports the country’s waste companies ready to take on.
– We see it as an environmental task that must be solved. And we want to help ensure that it is resolved as well and efficiently as possible.
– That is why the Danish Waste Association’s facilities are of course available to solve that task, says Mads Jakobsen.
He is chairman of the Danish Waste Association, which is an association of municipal waste companies.
According to the chairman, 13 plants across the country have shown interest in taking on the task of burning the mink carcasses.
There were a few plants that already in the autumn helped to burn some of the dead mink.
But for most waste facilities, it is an unusual task.
– We do not usually work with dead animals in the waste facilities. It is usually Daka who handles the dead animals of agriculture.
– This is done before the animals decay. These animals have been lying in the graves for half a year, says Mads Jakobsen.
He has been told that the dead mink at present have a consistency that can best be compared to feta.
According to the waste chairman, the animals will not be burned at once, but continuously over a period of time.
They will be mixed up with, among other things, household waste during incineration, Mads Jakobsen informs.
He does not expect the burning to give rise to odor nuisances.
In total, according to Mads Jakobsen, there are between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes of mink carcasses.
He expects to do some sort of test incineration in mid-May to see that the incineration process goes as planned.
If it does, the dead animals will be burned in the period from late May to early July.
