Flowering garden plants can save the life of bumblebees and other insects that come to life really early in the year.
Although the snow can still remain, a couple of warm days in the middle of winter can bring to life pollinating insects from the long hibernation. But so early in the year, Swedish nature does not have much to offer in terms of flowers.
In addition to the yellow Snowdrops which grow naturally in Central Europe and the snowdrop that comes from Central Asia, they are found in gardens and wild in southern Sweden.
Snowdrops and snowdrops can bloom and produce nectar even if the snow remains and it can be the rescue for insects that wake up early, says Niklas Johansson who works with insects at the Species Data Bank.
– The willow has not started to bloom, no dandelion or the like and then all of a sudden these garden plants become very important as some kind of auxiliary food for these insects that have woken up early, which would otherwise suffer from starvation.
