Finnish President Sauli Niinistö had a telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday afternoon to discuss ways to alleviate the situation on the Crimean peninsula and on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
According to the President’s Office in Helsinki, President Niinistö reaffirmed Finland’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The President’s Office also announced that Niinistö had said that Finland considered the implementation of the association and free trade agreements between the EU and Ukraine important.
Both also discussed Ukraine’s intention to establish a so-called Crimean Forum, an initiative for a new model of consultation and coordination for international action on the occupation of Crimea.
Niinistö had a on Tuesday "long" telephone conversation with the President of Russia Vladimir Putin which focused on the tense situation on the Crimean peninsula and on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
According to the Office of the President, in that discussion, Niinistö expressed serious concern about the deterioration of the situation due to the movements of the troops and highlighted the need for dialogue and measures to reduce tensions.
