The magma flowing out of the craters creates a new lava field that has become a hot spot – no name. The question arose among many, how to name the lava field resulting from the Geldingadalur eruption?
In the city closest to the eruption site, Grindavik, a name competition for the new lava field has been announced. The competition was announced on March 31 and ran until April 9. During this time, anyone could submit a submission suggesting a name for the new lava field, along with an explanation of the reason for choosing it.
Some people also made suggestions for naming the new volcano, the report said ruv.is.
Grindavík City Council is discussing the suggestions and Eggert Sólberg Jónsson, head of the city’s culture and recreation department, told reporters that lots of fun and interesting names had been sent. These names will be considered by the City Council, the Árni Magnússon Institute and the owners of the land where the eruption is taking place.
Interestingly, it is not allowed to name the land or regions by the names of living people, but that hasn’t stopped interested people from suggesting a new lava field name “Þríeykið” or “trio”, which is a term often used to refer to Alma Möller, Þórólfurt Guðnason, and Víðir Reynisson of the Icelandic Coronavirus Pandemic Response Team. Other suggestions were also made that were in some way related to the coronavirus.
The City Council will meet on Tuesday afternoon, and Eggert believes it won’t take long to choose a name for both the lava field and the volcano.
