WWF Regional Director Ismo Marttinen got a rare video of a young Saimaa ringed puppy in Taipalsaari in the southern part of Lake Saimaa last weekend.
The environmental organization WWF said that puppies born this spring may face more dangers than those born in previous years, because there are currently no fishing limits in force in the Saimaa area. The restrictions in force during the last five years have recently become obsolete, ie there are currently no rules restricting the use of networks in Saimaa.
The annual count of endangered Saimaa tire nests is underway. The purpose of the counter is to give an estimate of how many ringed seals were born during the winter.
The Saimaa Baltic ringed seals are believed to live in a total of about 420 in Saimaa. The endangered species relies on a thick snow cover to build nests to protect its sons born in February.
Experts from Metsähallitus’ National Forest and Wool Office estimate that this winter’s snowy condition means that the population of seals can grow by up to 20 individuals.
