Millions of disposable mouthpieces are used every single day at home.
Approximately five million pieces a day, according to an estimate in a new survey from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.
In total, Danes are expected to use approximately 2.4 billion disposable mouthpieces in 2020 and 2021.
The masks are used, among other things, in public transport, in supermarkets and from Wednesday also indoors in restaurants.
The survey also shows that Danes typically wear one disposable mouthpiece a day and wear it for less than one hour.
Most of the disposable mouthpieces end up in the trash, according to the survey.
But some also end up in nature or on streets and alleys.
37 percent of the respondents in a survey included in the survey have “to a large extent” experienced this.
The sanitary napkins that end up in the rubbish bin are disposed of with the remaining waste.
There is currently no system for recycling disposable sanitary napkins.
According to the survey, this is made more difficult by the fact that masks typically consist of both textile material, elastic and nose clips.
In addition, the discarded sanitary napkins pose a risk of infection.
– In addition to a closer examination of the technical and business aspects, it will be essential to deal with health risks in connection with the collection, handling and treatment of used disposable mouthpieces, the survey states.
The Danish Technological Institute has carried out the survey for the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.
It is based on interviews with 1550 citizens and a number of companies that import disposable mouthpieces.
