Vinterberg has been nominated for Best Director, while “Druk” has been nominated for Best International Film. Bookmakers and reviewers rate it as a favorite.
Vinterberg has also noticed this, he says.
– In the Best International Film category, it looks very bright. We have been at the forefront of predictions for a very long time. And what is a prediction so worth? Does it agree with what people are actually voting for? We do not know that, he says.
He has prepared a speech, he says, even though the Oscar Academy this year has asked the nominees not to have speech paper on stage.
– I’m terrified at the thought of having to give a speech. So I’ve actually thought a bit about what I want to say, but I think it’s going to disappear for me again if I get up. They have asked that you come without a piece of paper. Now we have to see if I comply.
– But it is a difficult balance such a thank you speech, because it is really on my mind to thank a whole lot of people, and at the same time I know how boring it is for other people to listen to endless amounts of names, says Vinterberg.
Vinterberg has only been allowed to take one person with him, which will be his wife, Helene Reingaard Neumann, and this means that many of the driving forces behind the film must stay at home.
Corona continues to play a major role in the United States, with an average of 60,000 infected each day. That is why the Oscars this year are very different than usual.
Vinterberg and his wife have been sitting isolated in California for ten days before the show, and they have been tested approximately every other day.
The Danish director, who was also nominated for an Oscar in 2014 with “Jagten”, is naturally looking forward to the evening despite the conditions.
– One of the things I remember from the last time was that you got some absolutely amazing drinks with some of your really great heroes, he says.
While a film director like 61-year-old Susanne Bier is an example of a Danish Oscar recipient who really used it to get a foothold with the producers in Hollywood, this is not the way Vinterberg will go if he receives an Oscar, he says .
– It has already triggered offers that are much nicer than I usually get. But I’m working on my own, and I’m preoccupied with that and find it most appropriate, says Vinterberg, who nevertheless would very much like to see “Druk” receive an Oscar.
– The statuette means something mental. I think it is wildly satisfying to experience – alone where we are now – how the world has received such a crooked and Danish film. An Oscar would just manifest that. And that would be a huge satisfaction, he says.
The Oscars can be seen on TV2 on Monday night from 02:00.
