Helsinki police suspect a 40-year-old taxi driver of several rapes in the city.
According to police, the suspect has drifted in a car with a taxi sign on the roof and picked up unaccompanied women from the taxi line. Police believe he has supplied his victims with alcohol and possibly other intoxicants when he pretends to take them to their intended destination, the release said on Wednesday.
However, the individual is suspected of driving passengers to an apartment outside Helsinki, where police believe he raped several victims.
Police say they suspect there is more than one victim, but they did not want to comment further on the exact number of victims at this stage of the investigation.
The suspected crimes occurred in April, and other potential victims may not yet have reported.
"The police have reason to suspect, on the basis of the facts revealed during the preliminary investigation, that the suspect has committed similar sex offenses also against as yet unknown persons," according to the investigating inspector Jutta Antikainen Helsinki Police Department.
The police have asked persons who suspect that they have been the victims of a similar crime to report it to the authorities: (during office hours) 0295 471 612 or by e-mail sexual [email protected].
