After many hours of work, the fire brigade managed to extinguish the fire that broke out in Heiðmörk yesterday evening and the works were completed. The last people left the park around four in the morning.
A representative of the Capital County fire department said the wind had eased at midnight, which helped fight the fire. The fire department fought the spreading fire yesterday for hours and you can see a lot of vegetation burned down.
At the most critical moment, 60 people from the fire department, rescuers and police fought to contain the spread of the fire. A Coast Guard helicopter was also called to the scene, and for some time it was helping with the extinguishing. Unfortunately, the operations of the helicopter were halted after the fire extinguishing equipment broke down.
It is estimated that the fire spread to more than two square kilometers, and the total area of Heiðmörk is approximately thirty square kilometers.
