The little brown bear cub caused a bit of a stir in the city of Kuhmo this week when he had wandered into a resident’s yard alone without his mother.
After following the situation for some time, the home owners called the police, who asked the Finnish Wildlife Agency to step in.
Kimmo Piirainen The city of the Kainuu region and part of the team that rescued the chick said that the bear weighed no more than three to four kilos or the equivalent of a couple of bags of flour.
"He was so tired, poor," said Piirainen.
The hungry chick took strength by sipping dog food and left for the woods on Wednesday night, allowing his mother to get the chick back.
By Thursday noon, the puppy had returned to the yard. The owners of the apartment immediately called the police.
After finding that the mother no longer cared for her offspring, the puppy was declared an orphan.
On Thursday evening, he was transported from Kuhmo to Kuusamo Suur’s carnivore center. Upon arrival, the puppy was named "Pena." The bear weighs about half a pound at birth, suggesting that Pena would be about two or three months old.
After separation, the mother usually returns to her son. In the case of Pena, the mother was given plenty of time and space to pick her up.
Although captive bears are sometimes reintroduced into the wild, it is not a simple task. Pena is unlikely to return to its natural habitat.
"It depends on his ability to learn social bear skills, but Pena thinks I would almost certainly rule out this option," Curator of Ranua Zoo Heini Niinimäki said.
