Vice-Chairman of the Finnish Party: The government gained popularity with the support of Covid

Vice-Chairman of the Finnish Party Riikka Purra has accused the government of spending too much money to support municipalities during the Covid pandemic.

In 2020, the government had granted the municipalities about three billion euros in support to support the economy when economic activity ceased.

Purra told Yle on Saturday morning’s talk show that the charges were more than some municipalities needed.

Finnish municipalities are expected to be in surplus from 2020, when the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities had forecast a collective deficit.

He said he believed the money would help governing parties in the upcoming local elections because they would not be forced to cut services as much.

Despite the fear, Purra admits that some municipalities really needed funding.

"Otherwise, not all municipalities would have performed even their basic tasks," said Purra. "Unfortunately, it went too far."
