Leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya Finland can play a key role in resolving the political crisis in Belarus.
"Finland is a great country. Many countries underestimate their power and influence. Finland is a neutral country with a unique opportunity to help us find a solution," he told Yle.
Tikhanovskaya has repeatedly appealed to the international community since she went into exile in Lithuania.
"Finland could take the initiative and demand roundtable discussions between the government, Russian and Belarusian civil society," he said the summit would be an important step in resolving the crisis.
Tikhanovskaya also appeals to Finland to help while visiting Helsinki in March.
"When you think and expect people to continue to suffer in prison," he said.
Tikhanovskaya was the main opposition candidate challenging the incumbent Alexander Lukashenko Belarus’s presidential election last August.
Western countries declared the election fraudulent, not recognizing the results. Tikhanovskaya was forced into exile in Lithuania after receiving threats after the disputed vote.
By 9 May, Belarus had detained 371 political prisoners, according to the human rights group Viasna.
