Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers and heavy military equipment were deployed at the Ukrainian borders, just 100 km from Vera Ivanovna’s house. A direct threat of war. Russia claims it was an exercise.
- For Vera, the big problem is that they have started shooting at each other more and more again.
- She does not want Russia to invade. “Change flags and new leaders, no fy, fy, it’s good as it is,” she says.
Vera Ivanona comes out of the small house, limping with her two crutches in full swing. We smile and laugh, and we have been seen before, but the corona has kept us apart for over a year.
Her dog barks a lot, no wonder considering that for seven years it crouched in its kennel when many hundreds of grenades struck nearby.
A guy drives out two prosperous cows in the meadow, best to move, he shouts.
And then it hits.
A dull bang is heard in the distance, in the Troitske direction, says Vera and sits down in the spring sun, a cat jumps up on her lap.
This is still the worst thing about Vera who lives out in a field outside the village of Luhanske, that it is shot so much.
– It was smaller in the autumn of last year, really nice for the soul. Lately, you hear boom on that side, boom on the other side, says Vera Ivanovna and shakes her head, the war that killed more than 13,000 people has started again.
To top it all off, tens of thousands of Russian soldiers and lots of heavy military equipment deployed at the Ukrainian borders, just 100 km from Vera’s house.
It was a threat, but Russia claims it was an exercise. However, Russia is the engine driving this war, following the annexation of Ukrainian Crimea in 2014.
Vera Ivanovna does not want Russia to invade. Change flags and new leaders, no fy, fy, it’s good as it is. She has no idea what she would say if the Russians came, she probably would not be allowed to say anything at all.
