US Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomes the initiative.
– Denmark is taking a step forward with the investment of around DKK 1.5 billion, he says at a press conference on Monday in Copenhagen during a visit.
– Through technology, it provides a capacity to know who is doing what and where at any given time. It is usually important to maintain safety.
The increased surveillance will detect Russian planes flying over the Faroe Islands and Greenland and find Russian submarines in Arctic waters.
The Commonwealth’s right of disposal over parts of the Arctic makes Denmark an even more important ally. It is in parts of diplomacy referred to as the Greenland map.
Both the Danish Foreign Minister, Jeppe Kofod (S), and his American colleague emphasize the importance of increased surveillance in the Arctic.
The Americans are particularly interested in Denmark improving its surveillance of the kingdom’s sea and air territory.
Blinken appreciates the Danish effort and does not comment on whether he would like to see an increased effort, which several researchers have speculated about.
– We really appreciate the role that Denmark plays in helping to do that. And that is one of the things we are looking at together ahead of the NATO meeting in a month’s, says Antony Blinken.
The US Secretary of State is in Denmark on Monday, which he will visit in connection with his participation in a meeting of the Arctic Council, which will take place on 19-20. May in Iceland.
