- To save Sweden’s southernmost glacier, Helagsglaciären, from melting away, two people from the organization POW, Protect Our Winters, want to try covering parts of the glacier with a white cloth.
- “The purpose of the project is to highlight the important role of glaciers in this enormously rapid climate change that is happening that we are all affected by,” says glaciologist Erik Huss, who together with the adventurer Oskar Kihlborg is driving the project.
The method of covering glaciers in the summer to reduce melting has been tested elsewhere in the world and now it is relevant to investigate whether it can also work in Sweden.
Initially, the application to the County Administrative Board of Jämtland County concerns a small area of five times ten meters, which is covered from mid-June to September for a period of five years.
