Is it a crime?
Because of the incident, Hamdi and her family have reported the man making racist remarks against her to the police.
But some say the incident cannot be categorized as a crime because it did not become violent – and this despite a recent increase in reported cases.
According to figures revealed by police in 2020, recorded hate crimes increased by 27 percent from 2018 to 2019.
The increase primarily involves race and religion, where racially motivated hate crimes accounted for 312 reports and 180 reports related to religion.
PM terrified
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was among the many who were affected by the disturbing video.
“Parents and two young children were unreasonably forced to endure shocking and racist words because of their skin color. It affected me, ” Frederiksen wrote on Facebook.
“The family had the courage to stand up in the light of the situation. We all have a responsibility to speak out – against racism, hatred and discrimination. It does not belong in Denmark. ”
The Liberal Alliance party’s Jan E Jørgensen argued that this type of crime should be discussed at a higher level.
“It must be a criminal offense to verbally attack a family that has nothing wrong,” he said.
“It is worrying. We need to have a discussion with the Minister of Justice about what we can do about this problem. ”
