Yesterday evening a gray coating floated over the capital, and the air quality in Kópavogur and downtown Reykjavik was deemed unhealthy. According to the meteorologist, the explanation for this phenomenon is dust pollution from the southern sands, which they are moving through the southeast.
“There has been no rain recently, so all the sands around Markarfljót and its surroundings are very dry. The southeast wind carries it directly here. “ – says meteorologist Eiríkur Örn Jóhannesson in an interview with Vísir.
People who are sensitive to such phenomena are advised to be cautious. “This type of pollution has the same effect as the dust pollution from studded tires in winter – it is a similar particle size and makes the air quality bad.”
According to the meteorologist, the southeast wind will be on the weather maps until Sunday. The yellow weather alert will be effective today at noon for the Faxaflói area, southwestern Iceland and the Central Highlands due to high winds and will continue until Saturday.
However, on Saturday night there should be rainfall and there is a chance for greater visibility during the weekend.
“Then this phenomenon is likely to stop. It is extreme due to the extraordinary drought that can be seen, among others, in after fires. “
