Weather permitting, a solar eclipse will be available across Iceland on Thursday morning, June 10, morning. Observers in Reykjavik will be able to see at its peak the Moon covers 69% of the sun’s disk.
It will be the largest solar eclipse seen from Iceland since March 2015. Then the Moon blocked 97% of the Sun.
In the capital, the eclipse will start at 9:06 am, then we will begin to notice that the moon is obscuring the sun’s disc. The eclipse will peak at 10:17 am and will be greatest in the west of the country. According to information on the astronomy website, 66% of the Sun will be blocked by the Moon in the east of the country.
The eclipse ends in Reykjavik at 11:33 am, but this time varies somewhat across the country. To observe this phenomenon, you need protective equipment, special dark glasses for observing the Sun or welding glasses with a strong filter.
Solar eclipses such as these occur when the Moon is in a straight line between the Earth and the Sun. West of Iceland there will be a so-called annular eclipse, and it occurs when the Moon is a little too far from Earth to obscure the entire solar disc. Then you can see a thin circle of light around the moon. The eclipse will cover Canada, Greenland, the North Pole and Russia, but the most suitable place to observe it is northern Greenland.
We are five years old until the total solar eclipse in Iceland on August 12, 2026. It will be the first total eclipse seen from Iceland since 1954 and the first seen from Reykjavik since June 17, 1433.
