A violent fire in several shipyard buildings in Faaborg is under control shortly after midnight on Friday night. However, the fire continues to produce toxic fumes.
The smoke is harmful to health by inhalation for another three to four hours, the Funen Police inform in an emergency announcement.
Citizens of Faaborg, located south of Kildetoften and south of Bjernevej, are encouraged to stay indoors and turn off ventilation.
An employee at the yard has been taken for observation for smoke poisoning, says duty officer Henrik Strauss at Funen Police. The condition of the employee is unknown.
– It is fiberglass, aluminum and asbestos that develop the dangerous smoke. Since we have not been able to get close yet, we do not know what ignited the fire in the first place, he says.
The shipyard buildings are located at Værtsvej 7 in Faaborg.
Police are urging citizens to pass on the emergency message to others in the area.
If you feel unwell after inhaling the smoke, contact a doctor on telephone number 1813 or in severe cases call 112.
Lars Høg Schou, Chief Operating Officer of the Danish Emergency Management Agency, writes on Twitter that the Emergency Management Agency of South Jutland has been redirected to Faaborg. There are 12 firefighters with wagons.
He further writes that a drone team from the Danish Emergency Management Agency Midtjylland has also been deployed.
According to the duty officer at Funen Police, the police have ten men on the scene.
The fire broke out in the eastern part of the yard. That part houses a company called Newline, which produces treatment plants. It writes Fyens.dk
This is the second time on Thursday that firefighters are battling a major fire in Faaborg. On the night of Thursday, lightning struck and started a fire in two listed buildings.
Here, the residents of eight apartments had to be evacuated. None of the residents were injured, but according to Fyens.dk, the properties were destroyed.
– The fires have no relationship, but it is the same fire brigade that is fighting once again, and the same citizens who are responsible for the shots, so you can send them a loving thought, says Henrik Strauss.
