270 guests were invited to the funeral in the church, which is a stone’s throw from Christiansborg, which was Schlüter’s workplace for many years.
At the funeral, Bishop of the Diocese of Copenhagen Peter Skov-Jakobsen spoke about Schlüter’s person. About his humor, humility, acting as a politician and importance to his immediate family.
The bishop referred to a quote from Schlüter: “I want to be remembered for everything. Both the small and big decisions – also those that went against me. I do not like to forget them.”
– There is both tenderness and bite in those words. It is an unsentimental person who dares to say them, commented Peter Skov-Jakobsen and continued:
– He is also a truth-seeking person, one who likes to find ways, and who is not unaware that power, responsibility and esteem for democracy and life must go hand in hand.
For the funeral, the family had chosen four hymns: “Morning has gold in its mouth”, “It smells light green of grass”, “In all its glory now the sun shines” and “You who have lit millions of stars”.
The funeral began at 1 pm, and around 1.45 pm the coffin was carried out of Holmen’s Church. Shortly before 2 p.m., it was driven away while family and friends gathered in front of the church building.
