Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir expressed wishes to fishermen, fish processors and their families on the occasion of Fisherman’s Day. He also mentions those who died at sea.
She explained that the fishing industry occupies a special place in the minds of Icelanders because it has long been the main source of national income. It also welcomes the fact that the number of accidents at sea has decreased significantly and thanks those who are making every effort to prevent accidents, as well as the sea rescuers.
There are celebrations throughout the country to celebrate this day, but in a changed form due to the limitations of the number of people who can meet in one place.
On the occasion of this day, the President of Iceland makes numerous trips: “Today I am attending a memorial service dedicated to the fishermen who have not returned from the sea, as well as the celebration at the monument to the unknown fisherman in Fossvogskirkugarður in Reykjavík. I will also attend mass at the Reykjavík Cathedral. In the afternoon I will reach Grindavík. I will also be there for a solemn mass and a moment of remembrance at the monument to the missing sailors. At the same time, my wife Eliza will be celebrating at Vestmannaeyjar and will give a speech there on the occasion of Fisherman’s Day “ – writes Guðni on his Facebook profile.
