It was otherwise one of the reasons why Søndergaard took one more turn on the national team after the Olympic gold in 2016.
– I would also like to try to win the World Cup. I’ve only gotten a few silver medals and it could be fun to get that star on the clothes too. But let’s see now, he said in 2016 to TV Midtvest.
As you know, it did not succeed when the World Cup in 2017 was his last final round, where Denmark did not win a medal.
But two World Cup silver medals still adorn nicely in Kasper Søndergaard’s impressive career, which ended in 2020.
He never went abroad to play handball, but was a profile in the Danish league for both Aarhus, Kolding and Skjern.
Regarding the lack of adventure abroad, Søndergaard told DR in 2015 that a trip to Germany in particular has enticed.
– I have always had a good time in Denmark, and abroad has attracted me before, but I do not regret that I have never been abroad. I have had my ambitions and desires set by playing in Denmark, so I do not regret anything, Søndergaard said at the time.
Life on the court ended in Skjern Handball after almost ten years in the green colors. But today Søndergaard has moved to the bench as assistant coach in the West Jutland tradition club.
At the same time, he has been used as a national team expert on DR during the finals.
For about ten years, he was a fixture on the national team as a right-back, where he excelled in attack, but had to run out when it came to line up in defense.
But the lack of ability in the defense was to that extent offset by his attacking play, where he was a terrific dueling player on the outside of the opponent’s defense.
He made his final round debut in 2007 with World Cup bronze and helped win Denmark’s first European Championship gold in 2008 and Olympic gold in 2016.
In total, Kasper Søndergaard helped win seven final round medals for the national team.
Twice European Championship gold, one Olympic gold, two silver medals and a bronze for the World Cup and one silver medal for the European Championships.
In the men’s handball league, he has helped win the Danish Championships for both Kolding and Skjern. He has also lifted the cup gold.
He reached 184 matches in the national team jersey, where it became 395 goals.
Privately, Kasper Søndergaard is married and has three children.
