Finland is scheduled to open a work-based ferry trip from Estonia next week. The move is due to pressure from the Estonian government on the fate of thousands of Estonian workers who are currently unable to easily visit their families on the other side of the Gulf of Finland.
According to the government, it has initially tried relaxed restrictions for air passengers arriving from Estonia, but it is an expensive option for many Estonians working in Finland.
Prime Minister of the country Kaja Kallas had written an open letter on Friday morning calling on Finland to change its ways, as many people cannot afford to fly back and forth with their children.
The Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin’s (SDP) office told Yle that a policy change is coming.
"The Home Office is preparing a proposal for the government to consider next week how work-based travel on ferries and land borders can be allowed in a Covid-safe manner. The government aims to gradually ease restrictions on Schengen borders and open up travel in a Covid-safe manner," the statement said.
