Airbnb has provided the Icelandic tax inspector with data that has raised suspicions of massive tax violations by Icelanders in connection with the use of a website that brokers accommodation to tourists.
The case is described today by Fréttablaðið, where it is stated that the gravity of the infringements depends, inter alia, on the amounts that have not been disclosed in the tax returns.
In some cases, these amounts can amount to tens of millions of ISK.
The newspaper said last year the tax investigator received information that in 2015-2018, Icelandic taxpayers renting accommodation through Airbnb had revenues of $ 25.1 billion. Since then, the office has been working on data processing.
The investigation is now starting to take shape and Theodóra Emilsdóttir appointed as Tax Investigation Officer says there are violations that are serious and large-scale. She also added that they will be investigated further and these cases may go to court.
