Meeting restrictions have left their mark on the celebrations taking place today, June 17, though they will follow the traditional format. At. 10:15 – live broadcast on channel 1 of the mass celebrated in the cathedral, during which Bishop Agnes M. Sigurðardóttir will preach. The President of Iceland will then lay a wreath from the Icelandic people in memory of Jón Sigurðsson.
At. Live on TV will begin at 11:10 AM, during which Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir will deliver a speech to the nation and fjallkonan (a woman from the mountains) will read the poem.
There will be events in the capital that are not announced at a specific time, and for some even places are not specified, which will prevent large groups of people from forming. The district councils have also organized events and the program can be found on the website 17júní.is.
There will be five neighborhood festivals in Kópavogur. Wearing masks and disinfecting hands will be obligatory at the festival. There will be no traditional celebrations in Seltjarnarnes, instead there will be a treasure hunt and the opening ceremony of the swimming pool.
Flag design is proposed in Garðabær, and a varied program of celebrations will be available throughout the city at Hafnarfjörður, including a parade at 1pm from Hraunbyrgi via Hjallabraut.
